Bracing for an increase in need as families see a significant decrease in monthly SNAP benefits
On the heels of an explosion in food insecurity in 2022, as well as the highest January and February totals in our 48 year history, Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays is bracing for an even greater rise in need. As of March 1, families and individuals who are recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) saw a decrease of at least $95 a month. This is the result of the expiration of emergency allotments to SNAP which were approved by Congress in March 2020 in an effort to help address rising food insecurity during the pandemic.
Approximately 40% of Loaves & Fishes/Friendship Trays clients receive SNAP benefits.
“We have never had to turn anybody away in our 48-year history because we’ve run out of food, and I don’t want that to happen on my watch.”
